Okay, we all know I love me some mind rot: Stupid, gossipy magazines, fashion blogs, cheeseburgers and french fries, 80s music videos, YouTube. For real. I watch documentaries about aliens. I watch old interviews with Princess Di. I also read James Joyce, but I’m not gonna lie: I prefer to look at pictures of what Reese Witherspoon wore to the Oscars.
I know. As a tweedy Brit lover, I suck. I should be squabbling with my mum over the flowers on Camilla’s latest hat.
But, anyway, sometimes you DO find pretty incredible things on YouTube. For example: “A Single Thread.” I’m not sure if that’s the band name, or if this guy is pulling a U2 and that’s his NAME name, or what, but he plays this incredibly cool stringed instrument called an Igil. Apparently it’s a traditional instrument from Tuva or Tyva, a region just south of Siberia in Russia.
How classical and folksy and academic can you get, right?
Well, he did modify the igil a bit. He did plug it in.
Shall post them here to keep me honest… and so those of you with busier lives can laugh somewhere between indulgence and bitterness (depending on how much you like me) and think of how my life is really nothing short of a day-trip to Toulouse with cheddar cheese on rye.
Or something like that.
Spring (henceforth to be known as the remainder of April and the month of May):
Writing: have readers look at draft #2 of Little Wecott book. Get feedback. If extensive corrections needed, then get those done, otherwise: proceed to draft #3 [language and style clean-up]. Outline next book. If V good, will also write short story about travel that is blatting about in head.
Reading: Minimal goals in this dept. Finish Trollope and book on eastern religions for sure, and catch up where I can on recent shelf of books: Best American Essays ‘08, Diary of Anais Nin, Flush, Eye of the Elephant, and Keep in Step with the Spirit.
Clean out the digs. Level of acceptable cleanliness to be determined based on sanity [to be closely monitored].
Achieve perfection in the baking of fruit cobblers. For serious, people, peach raspberry cobbler, blueberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream—this is important.
